Chaum’s idea was to break the linkage between the issuance and usage of a credential. This means that when Alice shows her credential to the website, all the site learns is that Alice has been given a valid credential. The site should not learn which issuance flow produced her the credential, which means it should not learn her exact ID; and this should hold even if the website colludes with (or literally is) the issuer of the credentials. The result is that, to the website, at least, Alice’s browsing can be unlinked from her identity.
